how do you show realistic looking icing on a cake in an oil or acrylic painting?

I try to paint pictures of cakes in oils..but always get stumped when it comes to painting the icing on there. It never seems to look realistic. What technique or brush stroke should I use? What size paint brush? Should I use a palette knife instead? Any on line tutorials for this?

The icing is very close to white with loads of blue and gray tones Blend those and cover with an off white/warm gray glaze. Now apply a cool white highlights They should be sharply off set to the warmer tones. In that put smaller highlight in (pure) titanium white again non blended. The glaze should now appear the be wet and shiny.

Also this video will be helpful as glazing is very close to painting glass.

Here's my opinion: artistic talent is largely learned. Most of the so-called experts will argue this statement, of course. They’ll proclaim that artistic oil painting techniques are only in the grasp of those rare individuals that are born with a mysteriously God-like ability to create art. Being lowly mortals, we should never even try to understand art let alone try to create it. Give me a break! Click here For the rest of the story: Free Painting Lesson
