WONDER WOMAN #600
DC Comics finishes off June by releasing the third and final anniversary issue following Batman and Superman. After a 70-year history Wonder Woman gets a bold new costume change like the one given to her when she gave up her role of Wonder Woman to Artemis.
According to current scribe J. Michael Straczynski, the new costume reflects her origins within both the Amazon world and the outside world. It is designed for the 21st century as the storyline reflects these changes. The new costume is designed by DC Comics co-publisher Jim Lee. The costume is to give female fans an answer to the question of ‘How does she fight in that thing without all her parts falling out? or ”What woman wears the same outfit for sixty years without accessorizing?” This is a Wildstorm version of Wonder Woman. Stan Lee’s version of Wonder Woman was better.
The issue is filled with pin-ups and I felt like I was going through a swimsuit issue. Gail Simone story has no emotional depth to her story except that other heroes worship Wonder Woman as an idol and really wastes George Perez’s artwork. If I were to choose someone who was worthy of writing Wonder Woman then I will definitely pick Amanda Conner. She brings a connection to the story as well as a sense of humor that brings out Wonder Woman’s character.
Louise Simonson brought a filler issue with a team-up with Superman. Geoff Johns story with one of my favorite artist Scott Kolins is too short to really judge because it was a prequel to J. Michael Straczynski’s prologue to Odyssey. Does that even make any sense?
In interviews Straczynski gave us the background of the story. The time-shifting by the Olympian gods that created Wonder Woman has been changed so she grew up in the modern and urban environment with little memory or connection to her mythical origins. The reason for the change is to bring a new and fresh vibe to the series.
They have changed the timeline for unknown reasons and the Gods removed their protection fromParadise Island and left it vulnerable to attack. Hippolyta gave up her 3 year-old daughter to a handful of guardians in a desperate act before the island was destroyed. Her mother and most of the Amazons on the island were killed and Diana was taken to New York.
Now twenty years later Diana is unaware of the other timeline except for flashbacks and does not have access to her powers yet. Wonder Woman is reborn and she embarks on a new mission to avenge the fall of Paradise Island as well as search for the gods who abandoned the island. Almost feels like an episode of Lost: We have flashbacks and a island.
As much as I really wanted to enjoy this anniversary issue it really failed to live up to the hype.

Here's my opinion: artistic talent is largely learned. Most of the so-called experts will argue this statement, of course. They’ll proclaim that artistic oil painting techniques are only in the grasp of those rare individuals that are born with a mysteriously God-like ability to create art.
