Art therapy?
What is the salary range for an art therapist? How long do I have to be in college? Is there anything else I need to do/have before I start practicing? How available are jobs as an art therapist
The salary range for an art therapist would depend on a number of things… from where you work to how much school you have. I would guess the range would be the same as a counsellor or psychologist (30,000 – 100, 000$/year here in Canada).
How long do you have to be in college… this also depends. On your province/state and it’s regulations, and what kind of accreditation you want. Here’s the link for the Canadian Art Therapists Association http://www.catainfo.ca/ . This site provides information on their registration guidelines, but they will not insure you are accredited or can receive third party payments.
Here’s the thing though. You can go to a college for art therapy, but you will come out being more limited. I’m studying in a combined masters/ph.d. program now for counselling psychology (clinical accredited). I have a strong interest in art therapy, so in a lot of my research and class projects I use it. My undergraduate degree was in psych, but I have a minor in fine arts.
When I graduate, I’ll be a registered psychologist. This will open so many more doors (and result in more pay) than had I done a masters or certificate in art therapy. I might or might not end up in a job that does exclusive art therapy, but I’ll be able to incorporate it into my work and/or private practice.
I plan to eventually do a certificate in art therapy, but this might be a while.
In psychology/therapy, etc… there a hundred routes to get you to the same location. You should talk to someone who does the job *you* want to do to see how they got there.

They’ll proclaim that artistic oil painting techniques are only in the grasp of those rare individuals that are born with a mysteriously God-like ability to create art.
